Choosing insulation finishes and protective coatings
Colour, texture and protection deserve a place in the scope before the installation is booked.
Start with what people will see
Tell the contractor whether the insulation will remain exposed and from where it will be viewed. A ceiling in a busy public room, a service space and a wall within reach create different expectations for the finished project. Share reference photographs as examples of appearance, not as proof that the same finish is suitable everywhere.
Record the desired colour and whether a consistent appearance across new and existing areas matters. If lighting will change during a renovation, include that information in the discussion of samples and approval.

A screen image is a starting reference. Ask how a physical sample or agreed mock-up will be reviewed under the intended lighting before the final selection is recorded.
What is Insulseal?
The manufacturer describes Insulseal as a protective coating for Monoglass or Sonoglass, intended to resist abrasion and help protect the sprayed surface. Ask whether a protective coating is being proposed and why. Do not treat a coating name as an all-purpose promise about washability, impact resistance or the needs of your particular space. Request the relevant product guidance for the intended use.
Put the finish decision into the quote
- The exact product and proposed colour.
- The areas receiving the finish or coating.
- The sample or mock-up approval process.
- Who approves the appearance and when.
- Any assumptions about existing surfaces and access.
- What repair, cleaning or maintenance information will be supplied.
Coordinate edges and future changes
Discuss how the scope describes transitions, exposed services and areas reserved for later work. Ask who will coordinate the finish when another trade needs access after completion. Clear responsibility is more useful than discovering a missing edge or patching question at the end.
For an existing installation, provide photographs and any available product records. Ask the contractor what can be established from those records and what needs a site review before matching or altering the surface.
Questions before you approve
Can the proposed appearance be shown with a sample? Is the finish included in the total? What might change the scope? Who supplies the final product and maintenance documents? Keep the answers with the accepted proposal.
